Herniated Discs, Sciatica & Nerve Compression
What Is a Herniated Disc?
Between each vertebra is a disc that acts as a cushion. When a disc shifts or becomes damaged, it can press on a nearby nerve, causing pain, inflammation, and neurological symptoms.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes compressed or irritated, causing pain that may radiate from the lower back to the buttocks and down the leg. It may also be accompanied by tingling, weakness, or an electric shock–like sensation.
Most Common Symptoms
- Persistent lower back pain
- Pain radiating into the leg or arm
- Tingling or numbness
- Muscle weakness
- Difficulty walking or sitting for long periods
If these symptoms appear, they should not be ignored.
Treatment Options
Most cases can be managed without surgery. Treatment may include:
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Physical therapy and muscle strengthening
- Injections
- Activity modification
- Surgery in specific, carefully selected cases
Surgery is considered only when pain is severe, persistent, or when significant neurological compromise is present.
